62% of people in prison, and 15% in the community, cannot read, or struggle to. People who are unable to read are more likely to live in inadequate, overcrowded housing, and experience poor physical and mental health. It means they have reduced access to education, training and rehabilitation programmes that could transform their lives and give them hope for a better future outside of the criminal justice system.

We support people who have fallen through the cracks in formal education. We know a lot of people have had bad learning experiences in the past, so our reading programme, Turning Pages, is designed to be different. It’s suitable even for those who’ve never read a word before. There are no exams and no classrooms, and learning can be tailored to suit individual needs. We know that learning to read can reduce re-offending, and provide improved future prospects, including employment.
