Families need support more than ever. The current economic climate and ongoing post-pandemic issues mean more and more parents are feeling the pressure and facing mental health struggles. Vulnerable parents are reaching breaking point and children's wellbeing is being detrimentally affected.

Situation
Over the last 6 months, Home-Start Herts (HSH) has supported 180 families, at risk of breakdown. Mental Health issues accounted for 66% of those referrals; last month it rose to 71%. Poor parental mental health can affect the way parents’ bond and care for their child. This can impact on the child's emotional, social and psychological development. Some parents we are working with struggle to get up each day, meals are limited and often convenience food, and bed time stories just don’t happen!
Solution
HSH provides early intervention via an intensive 1:1 home visiting support packages, tailored to meet each family’s individual needs. Responsive support is delivered weekly by a trained volunteer Family Mentor who provides emotional and practical support, helping parents build confidence, learn coping strategies, form positive relationships and realise their potential. Our family groups help children’s social, emotional and physical development, build parenting skills and provide peer support.
