Access to justice is the cornerstone of a fair and just society, but the decimation of Legal Aid means many people now struggle to exercise and understand their legal rights. Many people on lower incomes experiencing legal problems cannot get the independent advice they desperately need, and access to justice is effectively becoming only for the wealthy. Complex new changes to the law, on everything from voter ID to the right to protest, have left many people unsure of what their rights are.
Solution
Liberty’s advice service is one of the only services delivering free human rights advice in the UK. We help people understand their rights and empower them to act. Our team of legal experts supports members of the public with advice and information by telephone, in writing and through our specialist online hub. We also help charities, community groups and other frontline organisations protect the rights of their beneficiaries by providing them with training sessions, materials and workshops.
