Red squirrels and water voles, two of our most iconic native species, are on the brink of extinction in Northern England and need our help. We want to carry out detailed surveys so that we can target action to protect both of these important species.

    Situation

The red squirrel and water vole are on the brink of extinction in the North of England. Due to loss or fragmentation of habitats, and predation or competition by invasive species, they have become two of our fastest declining species. To help slow this decline we need to protect their habitat and understand more about their lives and spread. In order to know how best to do this we need data to target our action to bring these species back from the brink.

    Solution

NWT are a key organisation in the North of England in restoring these animals to our landscape. We will organise and support volunteers to complete extensive surveys that we can build a picture of the challenge we face to save these native species. Organising, delivering and reporting the results of these surveys is a substantial undertaking but one that is crucial to the success of these species.
