At Hastings Contemporary, we believe in the social power of arts and strive to be a community hub in our town. We plan to provide free activities for families from the lowest socio-economic backgrounds for the year ahead, including access to exhibitions, activities and a pilot free lunch scheme.

    Situation

Hastings is the 13th most deprived town in England and a quarter of children now live in poverty (24.8% of children). The impacts of COVID-19 and the cost of living crisis have exacerbated these problems. There is a shortage of free school holiday provision and family activities in the town. Many children and their families are struggling with poor mental health due to isolation and lack of support. We know from the data we collect that there are local postcodes whose residents don't visit us.

    Solution

Taking part in cultural activities and visiting galleries improves personal and community wellbeing and reduces loneliness. We want to ensure that children and their families can access the gallery regardless of socio-economic barriers and enjoy seeing art from around the world and participate in creative workshops. A free lunch pilot will provide additional support for families in need. We want to remove what barriers we can and support people to enjoy the gallery.
