Situation
Thousands of Congolese refugee children in Uganda are cut off from vital early years learning. Fleeing violence and growing up in the Kyaka II refugee settlement, they are behind in their development and at risk of permanent damage from their experiences. Short term education provision creates inconsistency, whilst traditional rote learning methods neglect the development of the foundational social, emotional and cognitive skills that are crucial for children’s future lives.
Solution
Our award-winning, low-cost, cluster early education model educates thousands of refugee children in small groups, in open-air, community settings. Resourcing refugees to independently provide education will ensure sustainable support for years to come. Providing holistic, play-based learning nurtures emotional intelligence, perseverance, problem solving and strong relationships, preparing children for school, and building their resilience in the face of an uncertain future.
