Situation
Gallions Music Trust supports the statutory music education provision in Gallions School, Newham. This is the 11th most deprived borough in the country. Our pupils speak 60 different languages and often teach their parents English. Many are refugee families. Music is one area where they can all learn together, beyond language, and all perform equally. Music helps them express themselves equally, outside traditional language and enables them to gain confidence.
Solution
At Gallions Primary School music starts in nursery with song and movement. From year 2 onwards every child learns a stringed instrument. Pupils gain confidence through practice and performance in orchestra, choir and ensembles. They are encouraged to believe that through their dedication, they can achieve anything. Music at Gallions is fully inclusive and we invest in music education for pupils with SEN. Music enables all pupils to express themselves and their emotions through a common language.
