We are looking for funding to update the equipment and technology in the music room at our Elham Valley Skills Centre. Music is one of the most popular of the 16 activities we offer the learning disabled adults who access our day services every week.

Of the 869,000 learning disabled adults in the UK, just 44,320 are in work and 58,000 access a day provision. This means 88% are stuck at home with their parents or carers, with limited opportunities to take part in any meaningful activities, develop friendships and lead the sort of fulfilled lives most people take for granted. The impact on these families is considerable, particularly where extra financial burdens add to the emotional strain of family carers who get little or no respite.

We offer day services to learning disabled adults, taking a person-centred approach, shaping what we offer and the way we work around each individual. 160 students attend our two sites weekly, choosing from a range of activities including, woodwork, pottery, horticulture, catering, photography and music. As a non-verbal medium, music is a means by which many of our students find it easier to express themselves, making it easier to interact with other’s and helping reduce anxiety and agitation.
