CCF estimates that 300 cubs are taken from the Horn of Africa each year due to IWT and conflict with farmers. The cubs are moved via Somaliland to the Arabian Peninsula to satisfy international demand for exotic pets. CCF has a partnership with the Somaliland government which confiscate cubs from farmers and poachers in joint missions with CCF. CCF now has 92 cheetahs that need care for the rest of their lives.

These animals can never be returned to the wild as they are acclimatised to humans and have not learnt skills from their mother on how to hunt. To provide a permanent large home for the cats, foster a culture of appreciation for wildlife and allow CCF time to reduce trade in the region, CCF has built the CRCC on 800ha of land provided by the Somaliland government. The CRCC is staffed with vets, cheetah keepers, meat preparation staff and guards who live on-site to manage and care for the cats.
