By creating edible gardens in East London, Toynbee Hall aims to connect children to nature, tackle food poverty, and improve physical and mental wellbeing. We will provide outdoor play activities, forest school and weekend gardening sessions for 300 disadvantaged children and their families.

Nestled between Canary Wharf and The City, is Tower Hamlets - the fastest-growing population of any local authority in England and Wales. Sadly, 56% of children living here do so in poverty, despite most having at least one working parent. Children in poverty are nine times less likely to have access to green spaces and places to play. Play not only provides respite for children living in adverse circumstances, it also offers opportunities for learning crucial development skills.

Outdoor educational activities led by our experienced Play Lead will engage children and promote learning about nature, gardening, and healthy eating. Forest school and outdoor play sessions will be held weekly in new edible gardens, together with two local schools and the Attlee Community Centre, enabling children to explore nature, develop outdoor skills, and engage in creative play. These new gardens are both at Toynbee Hall and in the schools and community centre we have partnered with.
