The cost-of-living crisis, rising inflation/interest rates, and high energy prices are making it difficult for many people to keep themselves and their families warm in the colder months-wages just aren't stretching far enough. We want to ensure that no one has to choose between eating and heating.

    Situation

The ONS shows that 55.3% of all the households across Wakefield are classed as deptived, which is higher than the national average. It is the 7th most deprived area in the Yorkshire and Humber county, from 8th place in 2015, as more households struggle to keep their heads above water. The average salary is 4k behind the national average, and the level of unemployment in Wakefield is higher than the national average. Money is tight for many families. Children are cold and hungry as a result.

    Solution

We will offer Emergency Fuel Grants to the 1,000 worse-affected households across the district. This quick, short-term measure eases stress when people are struggling to meet their bills (beneficiaries can apply for more than one grant, based on their needs). Fuel poverty has become a wider problem in the current cost-of-living crisis; even families with both parents in work are making some very tough decisions. From our previous campaigns, we have testimonies as to how much these grants help.
