Rough sleeping poses a huge challenge in Bristol, with 60 people sleeping outside each night. 14% of rough sleepers are women, but many women experience ‘hidden homelessness,’ hiding to avoid violence or abuse. 19% of Bristol's rough sleepers are women. However, women-only services are rare and many homeless women would rather sleep rough, risking assault and abuse, than go to mixed night shelters where they risk being re-traumatised. The life expectancy for a homeless woman is 43.

Spring of Hope women’s night shelter provides single sex accommodation, vital to ensuring women can feel safe and secure. Run by an all-female staff and volunteer team, the shelter is open from 10pm to 8am, 365 nights per year. It offers eight beds, in a city centre location. Women are offered clothing and personal supplies. Women have access to food, shower and laundry facilities during their stay. A day programme of support helps women to access a range of services and rebuild their lives.
