Situation
Every child deserves access to education, regardless of their background. In rural Cambodia, many children struggle to meet basic learning requirements. By age fifteen, 97% of students cannot reach basic proficiency in literacy and maths. The reasons for this are numerous- inadequate teaching and learning, overcrowded classrooms, and under-resourced learning environments. In remote rural areas, children are even further behind. Poor education is significantly hindering educational attainment.
Solution
We will expand our teacher mentoring initiative to new communities in Siem Reap Province. In these areas, children are significantly behind in education, with an average of only 3.7 years of schooling, compared to 8.7 years in urban areas like Phnom Penh. This aims to upskill experienced teachers to provide ongoing support, advice and training to less experienced teachers. By learning to build the skills of teachers progressively throughout the year, teachers will gain confidence and competence.
