Situation
Despite secondary education becoming free in Sierra Leone in 2018, barriers still remain, particularly in rural areas and for girls and young women. EducAid's Rolal school not only provides free high-quality education to students who would otherwise not meaningfully engage with education, but also a home to many students who have lost their parents as a result of Ebola and other tragedies. Port Loko district was hard hit by Ebola and has some of the lowest education outcomes in Sierra Leone.
Solution
EducAid students do not pay fees, but each day make a commitment to bring their best attendance, best behaviour and best effort to class in exchange for their education. EducAid's Rolal school also houses EducAid's Strong Girl Incubator in Port Loko, an accelerated learning programme that equips girls and young women rejoining or entering school with the skills, knowledge and confidence to join mainstream secondary school successfully.
