Northern Ballet’s beloved 1991 production of Romeo & Juliet was damaged in a devastating river flood in 2015. Our Rekindle the Romance fundraising will go towards restoring and recreating this timeless ballet, meaning this production can be enjoyed by future generations.

    Situation

Post pandemic Northern Ballet is working to re-build audiences for live performance, to support the company and the many theatres across the UK. To do this we need to engage existing and encourage new audiences back into theatres. Under new Artistic Director Federico Bonelli, the company plans to revive a hugely popular production of Romeo & Juliet, but damage caused by a 2015 flood of our storage facility means significant investment is needed to bring our star-crossed lovers back to life.

    Solution

By restaging a critically acclaimed ballet we aim to increase audience numbers and Box Office income, engaging new and existing audiences. As we continue our post-pandemic recovery, we recognise that now is not the time to take risks and commission expensive new work. Box Office income from our recent tour of The Great Gatsby show us that existing audiences enjoy a familiar title that reassures and brings back fond memories, whilst new ones are attracted to the accessibility of the titles.
