Our remarkable Belted Galloway cattle, fondly known as Belties, are the real-life superheroes of our nature reserves, but they need your help. This winter, we’re raising funds to expand our innovative conservation grazing programme. Help us to transform species-rich habitats in Surrey.

Situation
The growth of scrub and dominant foliage threatens the long-term health of our landscapes. Without conservation grazing, managing our reserves effectively becomes challenging. The grazing herds help create a diverse mosaic of habitats suitable for a wide range of flora and fauna. We need help to develop our grazing operation. We aim to expand 'no fence grazing' with specialized collars, we are cross-breeding sheep and conducting research to improve the management of conservation grazing.
Solution
By managing our reserves this way, we can create an environment where a multitude of species can flourish and where people can enjoy some of the most threatened habitats in the UK. Our grazing programme will continue to rotate our cattle and sheep across 30 sites, grazing 6,000 acres a year, matching their grazing patterns with the seasons and specific reserve needs. This will ensure the survival of many threatened species such as Nightjar, Silver-studded Blue Butterfly and Sand Lizard.
