We’re raising funds to combat the loneliness and social isolation that people so often experience when stepping beyond the prison the gates. Connecting with a faith community can make all the difference in this challenging time, which can otherwise prove devastating to their mental health.

The release period is an extremely challenging time with an estimated 44% of adults reconvicted less than 1 year after leaving prison. Social exclusion is a key predetermining factor for many within the prison system and fear of rejection a key factor limiting successful reintegration. Only 1 in 5 prison leavers connect with their faith community on release. The directory helps to overcome a prison leaver’s fear of judgement and rejection which can act as a barrier to faith community connection.

We will use these vital funds to produce and publish the 2024 Directory. This unique resource allows prison leavers to connect with faith communities able to offer welcome and support. Through faith-based social inclusion, these individuals have support for overcoming the physical and emotional barriers faced upon release and a helping hand for stepping into their new life, free of crime. The Directory will be delivered to all Prisons and Approved Premises across England and Wales.
