At least 7% of children & young people are affected by speech, language & communication disabilities, an average of 2 children per class. Those affected find it hard to understand what’s being said to them, or get frustrated at not being able to express themselves. They will struggle in school, where so much of the curriculum depends on spoken language, & in society where their difficulties affect most aspects of their lives. They are at risk of social isolation and economic exclusion.

Afasic has developed and organises a programme of weeklong specialist courses for children with persistent speech & language difficulties facing the key educational move from primary to secondary school, run by local speech & language therapists supported by volunteers. Courses run during the school summer holidays and are non-residential. They provide intensive specialist support and provide practical help & problem solving strategies.
