Situation
Disadvantaged children are being failed the most. 31% of children are now living in poverty - the highest rate for 25 years. Overall happiness of children is at a 10 year low. Children are unhappier with school than any other aspect of their lives, particularly children in lower income households. Disadvantage also increases the chances of suspension and exclusion, with pupils on free school meals four times more likely to be suspended or excluded from school.
Solution
The Nest is a new intervention programme that address the social and emotional needs of up to 150 children a year. In particular, the Nest supports children who have experienced trauma and have insecure or poor attachments. Groups of up to 12 children can experience a combination of a safe and homely environment with educational activities that help them form positive experiences with adults and peers, leading to improved self-esteem, self-efficacy and resilience as prerequisites for learning.
