Situation
In Sub-Saharan Africa 30 million children are out of school: they will not benefit from the social and economic opportunities that education brings. In Kenya, Uganda and Lesotho fees are payable for secondary education onwards. Many parents face the impossible choice of either feeding their families or sending their children to school due to the economic and social hardships they face. This means their families remain trapped in the poverty cycle regardless of academic abilities or ambition.
Solution
We work with our in-country committees to identify those children who most need our support and to identify particular education projects that fill gaps in the communities in which we work, including projects specifically aimed at reducing barriers to education faced by children living with disabilities. Through our programmes we enable access to education for these children who as a result are empowered to fulfil their potential, escape poverty and initiate positive change in their communities.
