Situation
Mental health problems are a common consequence of experiencing domestic abuse, and having mental health problems can also render a person more vulnerable to abuse. In 2020 domestic abuse offences in West Kent rose by 8.3%, in Kent numbers soared by 17.2%. Exposure to domestic abuse also has a significant impact on children's mental health. Studies have found strong links between poorer educational outcomes and higher levels of mental health problems.
Solution
Poor understanding of both domestic abuse and mental health problems, lack of knowledge of the links between the two, and long statutory waiting lists means that mental health can sharply deteriorate into a mental health crisis and suicidal thoughts. West Kent Mind will deliver free fast track counselling for people with experience of domestic abuse living in West Kent. Assessment will happen 72 hours after initial contact and 8 counselling sessions will be allocated with an appropriately experienced counsellor.
