Youth unemployment in South Africa remains a pressing issue, with approximately 63% of young people aged 15-24 unemployed. The associated high rates of poverty, limited access to quality education, and a lack of job opportunities contribute to this challenge and negatively impact economic growth and exacerbate social inequalities. This has left many South African youth unmotivated and unprepared for their futures.

The Award can be a powerful tool to support young people who face particularly challenging lives. Through the Award, young people can develop skills, improve their physical well-being, engage in community service and challenge themselves by undertaking an adventurous journey. The Award has proven to be a remarkably flexible and enduring method to raise aspirations and provide young people with equal opportunities to succeed, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.
