Situation
Domestic abuse is a huge problem in Middlesbrough: - rates are among the highest in the UK. Last year, My Sisters Place received 5560 referrals, our highest level of referrals since opening the service 21 years ago. Domestic abuse is widely accepted as a major public health issue with devastating health consequences and enormous costs to the NHS. The estimated cost of domestic abuse is £66 billion per year (Home Office, 2019). My Sister's Place have never worked harder and we need your help.
Solution
The IRISi intervention model implements clinical training which consists of 2x2 hour sessions on domestic abuse. It is vital that clinicians are aware that not all survivors use words to their experiences, but their bodies, physical health and mental health may show them the signs. We explore with clinicians to be professionally curious, and how to ask their patients about domestic abuse in a safe and trauma informed way, how to record domestic abuse safely and how to be able to refer to MSP.
