Human elephant conflict is a serious issue in Uganda. Farmers’ livelihoods can be eradicated overnight due to elephants raiding crops. Farmers retaliate by killing the elephants which in turn impacts negatively on tourism and leads to an increase in poverty. Electric fences are a proven vital solution in helping the farmers in the Kibale Park region to be protected from elephants. Space for Giants can construct the correct fencing to protect farmers, communities and elephants for the future.

SFG aims to construct 5km of fencing in conflict hotspots to mitigate conflict around the forested protected areas of Kibale Park. Record high cases of conflict are recorded here. For improved planning for sustainable HEC mitigation, we will monitor the movement of elephants in the corridor that connect two protected areas. Space for Giants will provide technical support to trained Uganda Wildlife Authority to deliver high quality fences throughout.
