Bowel cancer is the UK’s second biggest cancer killer. However, it shouldn’t be because it’s treatable and curable when diagnosed early. Help us grow our volunteer programme so we can reach those in your community who are most at risk of getting the disease and potentially least likely to survive.

Situation
We’ve identified 25 key target areas across the UK where people’s risk of developing bowel cancer and chances of a poor outcome following diagnosis, is increased. These areas are characterised by low screening uptake and a prevalence of various health inequalities. Some groups, such as those from ethnic minority backgrounds, those living in deprived conditions, and those with a low socioeconomic status, also face heightened risks and poorer outcomes, especially when living in a key target area.
Solution
We urgently need to expand and diversify our volunteer programme so that we reach the people who need us most. Volunteers raise awareness of bowel cancer from the heart of their communities and encourage uptake of screening which saves lives. They also provide support by signposting to our services and health information. To grow our pool of volunteers across the UK, specifically in our key target areas and harder to reach groups, we need to hire Volunteer Coordinators for each UK nation.
