We need more toilets! We have expanded Linda Community School, a school we have built in Livingstone, Zambia, from a primary school to include a secondary school. We began with 470 vulnerable children - because of the school’s success we have now nearly 800. There will also be a shower for girls.

Situation
The expansion of this school from 470 vulnerable children to nearly 800 means that the two ablution blocks that we have already built need to be supplemented by a third. Equipped with toilets and sinks, it will help with hygiene and disease control at the school. The school has been expanded to now include a secondary school. We need to include a shower for the older girls to help ensure that they do not miss days at school each month (many of the children do not have running water at home).
Solution
We will construct an ablution block designed around the needs of the new, older children. This will include flushing toilets, sinks and a shower. We have already built two ablution blocks at this school and have experience of what is needed. The block will be serviced by the bore hole and water tower that we have already built, as well as the existing septic tank system. For many children this will be their first experience of running water, sinks and flushing toilets: lessons are given to them.
