    Situation

Live orchestral music is transformative, but audiences with additional needs or disabilities receive far fewer opportunities than mainstream peers to engage with high-quality experiences, and this is especially true outside of London. Our Relaxed Performances will bring orchestral experiences to people who often find traditional concerts difficult to attend, especially people with special educational needs, autism, ADHD, sensory impairment, life-limiting illness, dementia, or other challenges.

    Solution

Our project transcends traditional relaxed performances, where often only the performance is adapted. Through extensive research and work with industry experts, we have co-developed a new format to engage individuals with even the most severe needs. Our immersive programme includes pre-concert familiarisation; a relaxed, interactive concert experience; sensory elements; and opportunities for post-concert music-making with RPO musicians, encouraging collaboration between performers and audiences.
