The UK is facing a liver disease epidemic, with 10,000 people a year dying from the disease. We urgently need funds to deliver our Love Your Liver public screening events across the UK. We will screen and scan people for liver disease and improve early diagnosis to save lives.
Liver disease is a leading cause of premature death in the UK. Mortality rates have more than doubled in the last 20 years and are continuing to rise. This is in stark contrast to other major causes of death, such as heart disease and cancer, which have decreased thanks to better awareness and research. 90% of liver disease is preventable, however symptoms are hard to spot and often don’t present until the damage is irreversible. Early diagnosis and community screening are vital to save lives.
Our Love Your Liver roadshows raise awareness and support individuals to take steps to improve their liver health. We offer free liver screening for members of the public, and, crucially, engage with public health teams in the region to improve local services for the long term. Around 10% of people who attend our events have indicators of liver damage and most are unaware of the causes of liver disease. A large part of the roadshow is about education and offering support for those at risk.
