1 in 4 children leave primary school every year unable to read properly and since the Covid-19 pandemic the situation is worse, particularly for the youngest and most disadvantaged children. Schoolreaders places volunteers into primary schools to listen to children read in a bid to change this story

    Situation

In 2022, 1 in 4 primary school children in England failed to reach the expected standard of reading when leaving primary school. These children will be disadvantaged in not being able to access their secondary schooling fully which has lifelong negative consequences. Poor literacy is a major factor on many problems in society e.g. homelessness, physical and mental health and criminality (62% of prisoners assessed by the Prison Reform Trust in 2022 had literacy skills expected of an 11 year old)

    Solution

One of the key reasons why children are not learning to read properly is that they are getting insufficient time with an adult listening to them to read on a 1:1 basis, often both at home and at school. Schoolreaders recruits, places and supports volunteers to go into a local primary school to give children one-to-one reading support on a weekly basis. Our unique live mapping system underpins our volunteer recruitment and placement process. Schools in disadvantaged areas are prioritised.
