We prevent early school dropouts of the lowest caste girls (and child marriage) in Nepal through supporting mainstream schools and associated learning centres that offer extra tuition. This appeal will create a fund, the interest from which will pay for five female tutors for five to ten years.

In south Nepal, girls from the poorest families often drop out of school early for a number of reasons. This feeds into child marriage that is endemic within the region. One of the reasons for drop out is the girls being unable to receive domestic support, their parents being illiterate. Also, girls (and families) may see no point to education since girls often fail to achieve academic qualifications and there is a perception that there are no work options beyond school.

We are funding Community Learning Centres whereby children from the lowest castes and ethnic minorities receive extra tuition and help with homework that reduces drop out from mainstream schools. The tutors are college students from the same caste groups whose modest remuneration allows them to complete their own education. So, this is win-win for children and tutors alike. We will create a fund that, through interest, will pay for five female tutors for 5-10 years, who will also be role models.
