Amma's trained pregnancy, birth and postnatal companions ensure that nobody in Glasgow has to face pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood without the vital emotional, practical and physical support they need. Our companions are by the side of hundreds of women as they are born as mothers.

    Situation

Black, Asian and mixed ethnicity women are more likely to die, lose a baby or experience negative pregnancy and birth outcomes compared to white women. These disparities are heightened among migrant populations, particularly those in the asylum process, who face multiple barriers like poverty, isolation, language and insecure housing. Many parent entirely alone, without the "village" that all new mums need to adjust to such a transformational stage of life.

    Solution

Amma provides additional care, information and advocacy to people who face barriers to accessing perinatal support. Our companions are trained to offer trauma-informed practical and emotional support to parents before, during and after their babies are born. Our Amma Family peer support programme helps parents to make friends, and develop confident parenting skills. Through education and advocacy, we provide information and resources to help our clients make informed choices about their care.
