Situation
50% of mental health problems are already established by age 14 and 70% of young people who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age. Over 20% of young people have a probable mental health disorder. Young people can wait for months for an appointment with a mental health professional. Our service provides an alternative form of therapy whilst young people are on a waiting list, to help improve their mental health through sport/activity.
Solution
We will provide young people at an early age ways to manage their mental health. Through our links with CAMHS/Schools mental health teams, young people are referred to a weekly activity session (mutlisport, yoga) where they also learn about breathing, communication, focus and heart rate. Our wellbeing journal provides information on a healthy lifestyle, eating, hydration, sleep and linking activity to mood. Our preventative workshops will give an understanding of mental health and being active.
