Following a successful pilot of specialist psychological support for those living with Huntington’s disease, we would like to expand this service to provide effective therapies for those who are at risk or have recently been diagnosed, along with their partners, families and carers.

Huntington’s is a rare genetic life-limiting disease, which presents in motor, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms. Nearly all of those symptomatic with Huntington’s will experience mental health problems, however due to the complex nature of the disease, many are unable to access services that understand their wide-ranging needs. Many in the Huntington's community tell us that they are excluded from mental health services due to a lack of awareness of Huntington's by healthcare professionals.

We want to improve the availability of psychological support for anyone affected by Huntington's. A survey of our community showed that 69% of those who are symptomatic with Huntington's have experienced significant mental health problems, whilst 71% of carers feel that their mental health has been severely impacted as a result of their caring duties. We will offer specialist psychological support to the Huntington's community, using both Narrative Therapy, and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy.
