    Situation

Research shows 1:6 children aged 4-16 & 1:4 aged 17-25 have mental health support needs. This equates to c6000 younger Islanders needing mental health support; nearer 8000 if the latest poverty figures are reflected (1:3 island children) because those living in poverty are 2-3 times more likely to be impacted by poor mental health. 75% of all mental health conditions are established by the age of 25 – without access to timely & appropriate support these conditions are likely to endure for life.

    Solution

Equipping young people with the skills to maintain their wellbeing is most effective when it takes place early in a young person's' life, it enhances their capacity to cope with difficult situations & reduces the likelihood of them developing mental health problems. The Youth Trust has developed a Wellbeing Toolkit, a 6 week after school club programme comprising of a range of activities & resources for primary school children to develop their knowledge of & the skills to maintain wellbeing.
