93% of woodlands are not in a favourable condition and only 59% are in any form of management, with woodlands becoming unwelcoming places, with diminishing tree health and biodiversity value. We are in danger of losing a key part of our natural heritage. Small Woods is also important to individuals and communities seeking improved wellbeing through nature-based activities.

There is an urgent need to set up sustainable, well-structured training pathways in the ancient art of coppicing and woodland craft, so the future of our broadleaved woodland resource is secured. Nature-based solutions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural ecosystems not only address societal challenges effectively but also provide well-being benefits. Small Woods' nature-based activities helped 70% of the 1,482 participants last year gain increased wellbeing and demand is growing
