We will deliver Box Therapy, a trailblazing programme which takes mental health services out of the clinic and into communities to reach young people experiencing poverty. Young people will improve their mental health, accessing therapy while they participate in sport in our boxing gym in Bristol.

Empire supports young people impacted by poverty and inequality. Our target group, aged between 8-25, has been significantly impacted by the pandemic and cost of living crisis. Most will have experienced multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences including family breakdown and abuse. These conditions mean they struggle with their mental health. Their distress is often displayed in ways that can lead them into trouble, including substance misuse and gang crime.

Box Therapy is a pioneering approach where a qualified therapist and sports coach seamlessly weave therapy into a non-contact boxing session. Weekly sessions take place in our boxing gym in Bristol for one hour over an average of 12 weeks. Participants are supported to establish goals relating to emotions, behaviours or situations they wish to change. During and in-between boxing exercises our Boxing Therapist will weave in a therapeutic intervention to encourage positive changes.
