Conservation efforts in the Maldives have little engagement with local communities, yet they are key to their long-term success. By providing training and education sessions, we´ll empower a remote community to become ocean guardians, enhance livelihood opportunities and support an inclusive society

Situation
Ocean conservation efforts in the Maldives are centred around luxury resorts, making it hard to involve the local community and preventing them from accessing opportunities in the conservation sector. This also leaves knowledge gaps in remote marine ecosystems needed to inform sustainable management plans. For effective conservation and management of marine resources, we need to empower remote communities to act as custodians of their environment and provide access to opportunities in the sector
Solution
Working closely with the local community we will establish marine research and education projects in Makunudhoo, an isolated atoll in the far north of Maldives. We will provide education and training workshops, building local capacity so that the conservation projects are eventually run by the community themselves. We will enable access to conservation and eco-tourism livelihood opportunities, creating a more equitable and inclusive society, while ensuring the conservation of marine ecosystems
