WildFish is the only independent charity in the UK campaigning for wild fish and their environment - both are at risk. In fact, Atlantic salmon have declined by 70% in Scottish rivers since 2000 and global freshwater biodiversity is declining at twice the rate of that in oceans or forests.

Situation
As the open-net salmon farming industry continues to grow exponentially, so too do the risks to our wild Atlantic salmon from sea lice, farm escapes and transferable diseases. Since the 1970s, the population of our wild Atlantic salmon has declined by 70%. A significant cause of this decline is the risk posed from the 77 million farmed salmon raised in open-net pens along the Scottish west coast and islands each year.
Solution
We raise awareness of the environmentally destructive nature of the open-net salmon farming industry and challenge the current acceptance of farmed salmon for consumption. We raise awareness of the impacts on wild fish and the huge environmental, sustainability and welfare issues. To do this, we launched Off the Table in October 2022 which is a targeted campaign that calls on the hospitality sector to take farmed salmon off its menus - engaging chefs, restaurants and food critics.
