We are supporting volunteers who want to monitor and restore the health of the River Aire & River Worth in West Yorkshire. We need funding to build an online pollution spotting tool, buy water testing kits & give expert advice on how to identify pollution and its sources along our river.

    Situation

Our rivers are polluted every day and, without hard evidence, polluters go unchallenged. Funding cuts have left the Environment Agency without the necessary resources to do these detailed investigations. We want to inspire and empower people living & working along our beautiful river with the skills and tools to investigate and address pollution together with flytipping & litter, illegal discharge pipes, invasive plants and animals, and farm runoff.

    Solution

We will train volunteers in the skills needed to protect their local stretch of river and equip them with the skills to understand what pollution looks like & what common sources can be found in our towns & cities. These "Outfall Safaris" are a powerful citizen science scheme that mobilises volunteers to survey entire stretches of river to locate polluting outfalls (or pipes) & report them for further investigation. Through these, we hope to make polluters take responsibility for their actions.
