According to government research, 85% of young people say that being in nature makes them very happy. However, children in deprived areas are 9 times less likely to have access to green space (National Children’s Bureau, 2013) and the educational outcome for children with barriers to opportunities is often poor. Gaps in learning and mental health have been exacerbated, coupled with biodiversity loss and climate change means the need for nature-based learning experiences has never been greater.

By spending a week on the farm, children will engage with the environment and farming, building friendships and confidence. They will develop emotional resilience and courage and the visit will educate and inspire them to be more connected to food, farming and to see themselves as the future custodians of the natural world. Time spent on the farm will be an outlet from daily life, allowing children to play, explore the wider world, and develop transferable skills readying them for their future.
