"People on low incomes who just about managed can no longer do so... demand for our foodbank is through the roof." This feedback from a partner charity shows the need to get good food onto plates. But 25% of all food grown is not eaten, and the wasted harvests make up 35% of total greenhouse gases.

Foodwaste in the UK 3 million tonnes of food grown in the UK each year goes to waste. This good-to-eat food is enough for an estimated 1.3 billion meals; however it is often cheaper for farmers to let the food go to waste, rather than get it to frontline organisations. Each tonne alone could supply 2,300 meals. But equally devastating is the environmental cost of this wasted food. Each tonne of waste food releases 1.6 tonnes of CO2e emissions and wastes 1.5 million tonnes of embedded water.
The redistribution of surplus food FareShare takes unsold good-to-eat surplus food and through its network is able to get that food to frontline organisations where it can be used, rather than it going to waste. This has been verified as a highly efficient and green way to manage food surplus. FareShare provides the food industry – from farm to retailer - with the most environmentally friendly option for its unsold surplus food, thus helping the sector in its sustainability development goals.
