Our iconic hedgerows and woodlands are home to many rare species of plant and animals, such as the Hazel Dormouse. However, we risk losing this emblematic animal mainly due to loss of habitat. With your support we will ensure the survival of this species by creating a network for nature across Surrey.

Situation
Surrey's Dormice are facing extinction. Populations in the county have plummeted by 75% in the last 25 years. Urgent action is therefore required if we are to save this emblematic species. This includes the restoration of their habitat on which they depend upon, which has become increasingly fragmented due to increased pressures on the landscape as well as by the use of poor management and a loss of skills in the traditional management of these habitats, such as coppicing and hedgelaying.
Solution
Surrey Wildlife Trust will employ traditional management techniques within six key reserves we manage in the east of the county. These techniques, which will include coppicing and hedgelaying, will aide the recovery of the Dormice by providing them with the connected habitat to thrive and navigate to other populations in the county, enabling them to reproduce and survive. We will also train volunteers and work with groups in the community to help us restore their habitat and monitor their populations.
