Nottinghamshire’s wetlands are crucial for wildlife. They are home to many of our county’s most iconic and threatened species, including booming bittern and majestic marsh harrier. Managing our wetlands is costly and time-intensive - We need urgent funding to keep reserves resplendent for wildlife.

Situation
Wetlands are important ecosystems, which are increasingly rare in the UK. Up to 90% of wetland habitat was lost , and over 40% of our reedbeds has disappeared since 1945. Britain is the most nature-depleted country in Europe and wetland species are suffering from habitat loss at an alarming rate. Without urgent intervention, we are at risk of losing iconic wetland birds, mammals and insects from Nottinghamshire’s landscape.
Solution
We will remove scrub in areas impacting habitat using a combination of natural, manual and mechanical methods, at five flagship wetland nature reserves. • Our Longhorn and Lincoln Red cattle eat and trample young bushes and saplings on shorelines & in reedbeds • An army of local volunteers will also help with manual scrub removal; using tools like loppers and hand strimmers to cut scrub back to ground level • For larger scale clearance, contractors will be brought in with specialist machinery
