Despite its beauty and drama, Scotland has become one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. We believe it doesn’t have to be this way. The Scottish Rewilding Alliance (SRA) is calling for Scotland to become the world’s first Rewilding Nation.

    Situation

As the world faces a climate and nature crisis, more people are becoming aware that Scotland's hills, glens, rivers and seas are falling far short of their potential. Centuries of unsustainable land-use practices have reduced our nation's biodiversity to alarmingly low levels and we need to bring it back. Rewilding provides an opportunity to restore abundance and diversity of life to Scotland’s land and water while creating opportunities for people to thrive.

    Solution

Across Europe vast forests and wetlands are being restored, and ecosystem architects like beaver and lynx are returning to areas where they’ve not lived for generations. As nature returns to Europe’s landscapes, so do people, drawn to new opportunities in a diverse nature-based economy. The recovery of the living systems upon which we all depend rests with a change in people’s understanding of wild nature. To change hearts and minds, we want to make a documentary film called Why not Scotland?
