Coetir Anian is a nature restoration project in the beautiful Dyfi basin in Mid Wales. We manage Bwlch Corog, a site of heath, peatbog, and rare Celtic rainforest, to improve biodiversity and carbon capture. We also run nature connection programmes for children, young people and adults in the area.

    Situation

We are at the tipping points of wildlife decline and climate change. The land at Bwlch Corog was badly degraded with a loss of wildlife habitat when we took it on in 2017. Young people are inheriting a landscape drained of natural resources and many are no longer connected to the natural world. They are losing its benefits to their wellbeing, and losing the understanding of how to care for it. This is true even in a rural area like ours, as young people spend less and less time outdoors.

    Solution

Coetir Anian is restoring ecosystems at Bwlch Corog, encouraging insects, birds, and mammals to return. We are actively restoring peatland and we manage a herd of wild ponies whose grazing helps native plants and trees flourish. We encourage local people to deepen their connection with nature through programmes for schools, for people with social or other disadvantages, and our community events. We also work closely with nearby landowners and farmers to support nature at a landscape scale.
