This project will reduce poverty, protect biodiversity & build resilience to climate change by training & supporting forest reliant Malagasy farmers in Dynamic Agroforestry. 40 families will develop sustainable livelihoods and reverse negative impacts of deforestation on their fragile forest homes.

    Situation

Madagascar is a top priority for biodiversity conservation due to its exceptional species richness and high proportion of unique plant and animal species (80%). However, despite conservation efforts, Madagascar has the 4th highest rate of deforestation in the world, driven by failure to resolve widespread, abject rural poverty. 81% of rural households live in poverty. Those living around forest margins depend on clearing forests to meet their basic needs (agricultural land, timber & firewood).

    Solution

This project aims to reconcile the conflicting needs of human survival and nature conservation. Training and supporting farmers living around the newly protected Tsinjoarivo rainforest reserve in Madagascar, will help them to develop and adopt a ‘Dynamic Agroforestry’ (DAF) approach to food production. DAF allows primeval forest to be protected, whilst degraded land is converted to highly productive edible forests, which provide a sustainable source of food and income for local families.
