We will create a new biodiverse garden with young people. They will gain new skills and develop a sense of ownership and achievement from being a part of its co-creation. The garden will mitigate the effects of the built environment and improve the wellbeing of young people living in the area.

    Situation

The site is in an area vulnerable to the adverse risks of climate change due to pollution and large scale development and construction. It is in an area of the city historically deprived and undergoing rapid urban growth. Access to green, safe spaces for young people living in the area is low, social deprivation levels are high, and there is distrust as the changes taking place in the area are out of the hands of local people. This is having a negative effect on young people’s wellbeing.

    Solution

We will co-create a biodiverse, safe community garden supporting the health and wellbeing of local children and young people. The focus on the handmade community build process will ensure local children and young people will be part of its creation from the onset, instilling a sense of ownership and leaving a positive legacy for the local community. Once completed the new garden will offer nature connection opportunities where children and young people can grow and flourish together with nature.
