Our goal is to eradicate food insecurity. We teach Deep Bed Farming (DBF), supported by integrated catchment management to regenerate infertile land for food production. Training farmers to use these sustainable techniques can double crop yields year on year and create life-changing benefits.

Many families in Malawi cannot grow enough crops to feed themselves. The land needs restoring to sustain both people and nature. Two studies by the Food and Agriculture Organisation found 29 tonnes of topsoil are lost from every hectare of farmland every year (FAO rep. 1999 and 2015). Additional challenges: - Flooding - Siltation - Evaporation - Erosion - Surface hardpan - Dry soils - Local water retention Farmers lack the training and support to change their situation.

Tiyeni trains farmers to implement integrated catchment management with Deep Bed Farming. Erosion is contained, more water is available, and the land becomes fully productive again. Tiyeni will empower over 1,000 farmers to look after the soil and water in harmony with the natural environment in the Emsizini area. Integrated catchment management is an approach that holistically looks at improving/protecting water, land and vegetation health through community-based collaboration.
