Situation
We face an unprecedented climate emergency and biodiversity crisis. Our seas are under huge pressure; increasingly busy, noisy and polluted. The conservation status of all UK whales, dolphins and porpoises and our impact on them is currently unknown. The waters of western Scotland support an abundance of life, a vital hotspot for whales, dolphins and porpoises. We monitor and protect cetaceans in areas of critical habitat within Scotland’s Hebridean seas.
Solution
Silurian undertakes year-round whale and dolphin monitoring, in all conditions. Over 1,000 volunteers have surveyed the equivalent of three times round the world on board Silurian. Collecting data to inform protection measures for minke whales, Risso’s dolphins, harbour porpoises, and basking sharks. To continue this vital work and make our iconic flagship a more effective and environmentally friendly survey platform, we wish to upgrade her hull and fuel tanks.
