The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world; where nearly half of biodiversity has been lost since the industrial revolution. But it can get better. We are restoring 100 of the UK’s most crucial landscapes to improve their condition for butterflies and moths facing extinction.

80% of butterflies and two-thirds of moths are in decline, a reflection of the scale and severity of the biodiversity crisis. We are losing nature at an alarming rate. Our work shows that even severely threatened butterflies and moths can recover with coordinated action to support communities and land managers in creating the habitats species need to thrive. However, restoring nature needs action on a large scale. This project will more than double our impact before it’s too late.
Having identified 100 landscapes requiring urgent improvement, we will build partnerships with key land managers, communities and local stakeholders to improve habitats in these landscapes by 2026. Through evidence-based conservation we will create safe havens for key species by demonstrating how to restore landscapes across a range of habitats, from woodlands to peatlands, and from grasslands to urban areas. The species we measure are an indicator of successful biodiversity recovery.
